Burstfire Neck Tension Gauge – Precision Inside Neck Diameter Measurement
The Burstfire Neck Tension Gauge is an essential tool for any serious reloader who demands consistent, repeatable neck tension for maximum accuracy. This precision‑machined gauge measures the inside neck diameter of your brass cases, allowing you to verify neck tension after sizing or annealing — one of the most critical factors in achieving uniform bullet seating pressure and top‑tier performance.
Consistent neck tension is directly tied to consistent velocity, improved ES/SD, and tighter groups. Whether you anneal your brass, neck‑turn, or simply want to eliminate variation, this gauge gives you fast, reliable feedback on every case.
✅ How It Works
Each Burstfire Neck Tension Gauge features 5 stepped diameters, machined in 0.001" increments, starting 0.001" below bullet diameter.
Simply insert the gauge into your sized case neck:
- Stops at 1st notch: ~0.001" neck tension
- Stops at 2nd notch: ~0.002"
- Stops at 3rd–5th notch: Up to ~0.005"
- Bottoms out: Not enough neck tension
- Won’t insert to top step: More than ~0.005" — excessive tension
This gives you an instant, repeatable reading without calipers, mandrels, or guesswork.
✅ Why Reloaders Use It
- Ensures consistent bullet seating pressure
- Verifies neck tension after annealing
- Detects brass variation, hard spots, or sizing inconsistencies
- Helps tune loads for precision rifle, ELR, and long‑range shooting
- Rugged stainless-steel construction for years of use

Comes in handy, another to for piece of mind
What else can I say easy to use. Only thing is not a flat surface for the bullets to drop. Had to make a Stan to sit it on
Let me tell you my intial impression on these tools. I was very impressed with the quality build of these guages. I purchased the whole kit because I have several caliber rifles and I wanted to ensure i had them all. I've used them on my 7 PRC, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6 ARC, .338 ARC. I have to test them on my 556 and 300 blk. But they are spot on in the measurement. I have a very good digital outside micrometer and each one I've used so far was spot on. Very impressed. Thank you Burstfire !!
The precision and craftsmanship easily rival industry benchmark products. Yet, when it comes to ergonomics and the variety of calibers included in the kit, Burstfire 100% dominates the competition as the undisputed leader. On top of that, their pricing is unmatched. To sum it up: on a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give them a conservative 12.5 for build quality, packaging, functionality, and their personal, top-notch customer support.
It works great!

It works great!
Easy to use. Wish I had one sooner.
A great tool to sort my sized brass ! Will you make a .17 cal gage ???
Good tool to have on my bench it would be nice to have ID on tool.
Great products at fair prices
They are deffently functional, the workmanship is adequate. One thing I noticed comparing them to another brand I have. They are not marked as to there size, that's handy when you have more than one. I like them, they are acurate, and affordable. I have been well satisfied with any of Burstfire products I have purchased. I am glad to see you in the market place. Ray
Very nice tool to check the neck tension a die is giving with a variety of range brass. Easy to use.
It works. It is a useful tool
Great product as usual from Burstfire
I have never concerned myself that much with neck tension but in the interest of consistency I decided to give this tool a try. Quality is awesome and although I purchased a Burstfire handle, I ended using a vintage Lyman tool handle I had on hand. Time will tell but most of my brass is pretty consistent with the only variation being between different brands. I am happy with my purchase.
Exactly what I wanted
I recently bought a Burstfire annealing machine and some accessories. The service was excellent and the products were as good as advertised. I recommend these folks if you are looking for the best of both!!!
Just learning about neck tension. This is a much need tool to aid in accuracy by insuring each cartridge had the same neck tightness. I am just learning but I think I understand why neck tension is necessary.
As for the tool.
Works great but there are a couple of thinks that could be improved.
The tool caliber needs to be stamped on the tool somewhere because the tools all look alike.
It would help if the diameter steps could be identified also.
This is a quality tool that should be on every reloaders bench.
I installed mine of the vintage Lyman wooden handle.
Works as intended.
Worked as advertised, a must have for checking reloads.
One of the best items I have bought along with the BurstFire 2 Annealer to help me shoot smaller gouops
Tool works exactly how I needed. Great service.
Well made, used to batch some cases form the same manufacturer that after annealing and sizing had different neck tension
Great service. Didn't have what I needed so they made one ! What more can you ask for...?? It's like dealing with friends.
Very Good Quality, thanks!!
Very reasonable price for what it does. Consistency is the mane of the game, and this gage will help you maintain it.
The neck tension gages coupled with the anodized handles are well worth the investment. They greatly simplify determining the amount of tension holding the bullet in the case, improving uniformity and down range accuracy.
This a great tool for confirming neck tension in .001 increments.
IM 75 YEARS OLD BEEN RELOADING FOR 58 SOME ODD YEARS AND EVERY YEAR I FIND SOMETHING NEW TO IMPROVE MY LOADS. THESE TENSION GAUGES IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF MY LOADS, GREAT PRODUCT
This makes reloading easy. Helps to find out of spec cases before loading. Great tool from A great company.
Been reloading for a few decades. Done a lot of prepping, understood the “science”, eliminating whatever variables I can find. This was one that slipped my mind before I annealed. Trusting the expander ball or mandrel will provide results based its size. So wrong. Using this allowed k to verify my results. As a result, I don’t 40% of my cases had neck tension variations. Determined source and now fixed. Easy to use and must have if you anneal.
My problem was I under annealed. I was using 750 tempilaq. After speaking with a few folks I was indeed under annealing. All good now. Thanks Burstfire for making excellent products at affordable prices.
Hello - bottom line I am glad I bought these Neck Tension Gages - the price is reasonable, and quality is very good. I am able to cull cases that have spring back and make sure all the cases I load are consistent. I measured each journal with a .0001" micrometer, and they are accurate. The 5 steps are .001". I would rather that the graduations are .0005" - for smaller calibers - however - I am glad I bought these gages and will likely buy more.
Purchased one of these with my annealer after speaking with Burstfire staff. A MUST HAVE in my opinion. I’ve been annealing for a few years on a different annealer. Upon checking my previously annealed brass, this tool made me realize how inconsistent my neck tensions were. Following burstfire’s instructions on proper annealing process, and then checked it with these gauges, my consistency improved right away! It wasn’t perfect but not their fault. I wasn’t separating by headstamps and my torch adjustment was not the same each time. After making these adjustments over the last month, my neck tension for each case is now SPOT ON!
